How to connect BarTender to SQL Server

Confirm the server, authentication, database and approved view before adding database fields to a label.

What this page helps you do

Confirm the server, authentication, database and approved view before adding database fields to a label.

Checks and steps

  1. Obtain the server or IP, instance, port, database, table or view, and a least-privilege read account.
  2. Confirm that the BarTender computer can reach the database network and port.
  3. Choose Microsoft SQL Server in the database connection setup and test authentication.
  4. Select only the fields required by the label and add a controlled filter.
  5. Preview one known record and bind fields to label objects.
  6. Test printing with the read-only account and confirm that no business data must be modified.

Scope and verification

Do not store a database administrator account in a label template. Use a dedicated read account that can be rotated and revoked.
