How to prevent duplicate serial numbers

Serial numbers need one authority, an explicit range and a controlled reprint policy.

What this page helps you do

Serial numbers need one authority, an explicit range and a controlled reprint policy.

Checks and steps

  1. Choose the business system or controlled service that owns serial-number generation.
  2. Define length, start, increment, range and reset conditions.
  3. Prevent multiple computers from issuing the same range independently.
  4. Check uniqueness before printing and reserve or commit numbers at a defined point.
  5. Reuse the original number for an approved reprint; issue a new number only for new production.

Scope and verification

A label template cannot resolve enterprise-wide uniqueness by itself when several systems or sites generate numbers.
